The government of Ghana, as part of its transformational agenda for the automobile industry, has identified Vehicle Assembly and Automotive Components Manufacturing as a strategic anchor industry to accelerate the country’s industrial development. Under the watch of re-elected president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the country has offered tax breaks to carmakers and promised to restrict the invasion of foreign second-hand cars. The Chartered Insurance Institute of Ghana (CIIG) has held its maiden insurance industry awards at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra last week. CIIG proved to be a super organiser when it held the maiden edition of the award ceremony, which they have long wanted to do over the past years but hadn’t been successful until that fateful Saturday night of November. The CIIG is the umbrella-body of all insurance professionals in the industry, and under the leadership of outgoing president, Rev. Asante Marfo-Ahenkora, thought it wise to institute a credible event to fill that gap. Speaking at the ceremony, Rev. Marfo-Ahenkora said the insurance industry - unlike other industries, had been bereft of an award team and an effort was made by the Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) some years ago to organise one, which unfortunately did not meet expectations of the industry and public as the event-planners failed to understand fully their peculiar industry nuances and complexities. He recalled

NIC frowns on reinsurance premium repatriation …US$40m transferred in 2019

Image
The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has shown concern over overseas transfers of reinsurance premiums out of the country. Dr. Justice Yaw Ofori, Commissioner NIC, revealed that almost US$40million left the shores of Ghana in 2019. “This has a negative impact on our cedi and the local economy,” the Commissioner lamented. He pronounced this at the 11 th Ghana Reinsurance Cedants Awards held in Accra last week. He therefore entreated all insurers to exhaust local capacity before any recourse to overseas reinsurance, so as to reduce premium flight and harness resources needed to develop the country. Though the Commission is enjoined by the Insurance Act, 2006, to approve all reinsurance arrangements, this is generally aimed at developing the sector since it promotes a system wherein each insurer has access to risk and premium emanating from the local market. Image
Over the weekend, Ada Gems Network (AGN) made a trip to the Ada West district, in the communities of Anyamam and Akplabanya respectively, to create awareness on breast cancer and empower young girls to take charge of their lives. These were done via house-to-house visits and community group discussions. All across the world, women in leadership positions are hampered by numerous obstacles, including pervasive and subtle or blatant attitudes and beliefs that women are unequal to men at home, work and in government. This event was held as part of activities toward the launch of Ada Development Network on 7th November 2020. The awareness creation campaign was marked with education on the need to accept persons with disorders, especially children, as part of the community, and self-check practices in order to detect early symptoms of breast cancer. Speaking to B&FT at the event, Executive President of the Ada Gems Network, Irene Amakie Sebbie said: “Many women with disorders are peop

Image
It is no secret that the 12th-generation Toyota Corolla has soul, which enables the sedan to be driven with feeling. Toyota cars are particularly robust, especially within the cabin and wheel areas. It is really fun to get into a Corolla because it has a boisterous personality.   It is also a rock-solid appliance that you can rely on. After spending time behind the wheel of the new Toyota Corolla, I am very influenced by the fact that it has soul. Whaaaat? Complete with an audio-infotainment upgrade that I would highly recommend, the Corolla is a sedan that made me fall in love with it. The new Corolla is more than just a car Toyota Ghana Company Limited’s blurb says “Nothing has changed. Except everything”. Needless to say, the overall look of the new Corolla is more energetic than most of the contemporary vehicles around. With the edgier styling and more engaging handling, Toyota has given car lovers an opportunity to love a car that has soul.   Traits of words like efficie
