COVID-19: Measures to be taken before driving
Yesterday, Wednesday March 26, the latest victim of the global Coronavirus
pandemic in Ghana was infected via a parcel delivered from the United Kingdom.
What this means is the virus can stay on surfaces longer than staying in the
air.
Every car or vehicle has significant surfaces and
therefore, these surfaces could be major source of transmitters of the virus.
This means, washing and cleaning your car before setting off takes on added
premium. One of the main parts of attention to consider is the interior of your
vehicle. There are various surfaces in the vehicle that need special
consideration.
For Trotros, taxis and other commercial vehicles,
interior of the cars should be sanitised regularly. You know why? Hundreds of
passengers use these vehicles on a daily basis and one cannot help but touch
the interior of the vehicles. Even if you are driving your own vehicle without
carrying any passengers, you should still clean your car because you just never
know.
Speaking to a washing bay attendant, Arnold Ofori, at
Teshie-Nungua, he noted that clients are making additional requests to keep
their cars clean in addition to usual washing of the vehicle and cleaning of
the steering, seat covers, handles, body, dashboards and others.
As a driver, you also need to put on gloves
to protect yourself against the virus. “Gloves on is
very necessary when he's detailing vehicles after the wash,” Ofori added.
“Finally, wash your hands often, dry it up and sanitise as often as possible.”
Toyota also
recently put up together a list of various areas of a vehicle that should be
considered to be cleaned to kill germs as a result of the coronavirus epidemic.
The seatbelts are
counted as one item and if you carry others in your car, you might have to
spend a little longer ensuring each of your passengers can enjoy a
factory-fresh ride next time they get into your car. Major parts of a vehicle
to be considered are; Exterior door handles, frame of door and roof, interior
door, pocket, handle and release, window switches, seatbelt clips and adjustment
buttons, steering wheel, horn button, control stalks, driver & passenger
air vents.
Others also include: dashboard, power button, gear shift, multimedia
screen, central air vents, heating controls, glovebox, storage compartment,
mirror views, interior lights, key, head rests & seat pockets, fuel cap,
wheel valves, boot lid, boot floor tab, boot close button, bonnet lid and oil
cap.
