Provident Insurance supports Accra Academy with GH¢100,000
Barely 30 days ago
Mr. Wilson Tei, Chairman-Insurance Awareness Coordinating Committee, voiced his
displeasure over government not paying attention on insuring state assets at a
forum organised by the National Insurance Commission (NIC) in collaboration
with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Insurance Awareness Committee
for second cycle students.
Just last Tuesday,
Provident Insurance Company Limited presented a Gh¢100,000 cheque to Accra
Academy to support the school in rebuilding its dormitory structures which were
destroyed in a recent fire outbreak.
Accra Academy
recorded two consecutive fire outbreaks which destroyed personal belongings of
students. More than 100 students of the Alima and Halm-Addo Halls lost their
personal effects, including books, trunks and food items during the fire
outbreak last month.
The insurer’s
donation is part of its corporate social responsibilities activities to support
reconstructing the facilities that were destroyed.
Mr. Ato Ewusie
Wilson, Managing Director-Provident Insurance Company, described the incident
as unfortunate - saying its consequences on the students and their academic careers
are dire.
Rev. William Garr
expressed his gratitude for the kind gesture by the company, and indicated that
school activities have returned to normal. However, he said, due to the
traumatic effects of the two incidents on the students, they were taken through
counseling sessions by counsellors from the Regional Directorate of the Ghana
Education Service (GES) in collaboration with the school to provide them some
relief.
He admitted that
the school has suffered a great loss, as the dormitories destroyed served as
residence for about 189 students. Currently, he said, the students have been
relocated to other dormitories - a situation that is causing congestion.
Mr. Tei advised
government to consider insuring its properties, including schools, to cover for
the loss of properties after any disaster.
“Government should
not be taking money from its coffers whenever there is a disaster like fire
outbreaks in its facilities; it should be the responsibility of insurance
companies to cover the losses,” he emphasised.
