George Mensah nominated Vice President of WAICA

George Mensah, Managing Director-Ghana Reinsurance Company, has been nominated as Vice President of the West Africa Insurance Companies Association (WAICA). WAICA is the trade Association of all insurance companies in Anglophone West African countries.

The nomination is coming the heels of a request from the WAICA secretariat in Ghana for a Vice President to assist the current President, Saye Gbalazeh of Liberia, whose term expires in April 2022.

B&FT learnt that at the end of Saye Gbalazeh’s tenure in April 2022, a fresh election will be conducted to nominate a president for the year’s Annual General Meeting and Conference, which all things being equal will be held in Accra, Ghana.

Subsequently, going by WAICA’s constitution, the sitting Vice President automatically gets the presidential slot. This means that if the AGM moves to Ghana in 2022, George Mensah will definitely be president.

George Yaw Mensah started his professional career in 1993 with Merrill Asset management (MLAM) as a Financial Accountant in Princeton, New Jersey (NJ), USA. He later joined Prudential Financial in Newark, NJ, as a Senior Analyst within the Investment Management Research team, where he was responsible for ensuring that the firm’s portfolio managers had the ability to achieve superior returns in both up and down markets.

Mr. Mensah is a product of New York University (Stern Business School) where he earned an MBA in Finance. He also holds a BSc in Accounting and a minor in French from State University in New Jersey.

In 2002, he relocated to Ghana and joined SIC Insurance Company as the Head of Investments and in 2006 became Executive Director of SIC Financial Service, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the insurance company.

Mr. George Yaw Mensah joined Africa Reinsurance Cooperation on April 1, 2010 as Assistant Director in charge of Treasury and Investment, a position he held until his appointment as Managing Director of Ghana Re on September 1, 2017.

Mr. Mensah has served on several boards, including the Ghana stock Exchange, as a council member. Other Board representations include NTHC Financial Services, Afram Publications Limited and Starwin products Limited, a pharmaceutical company in Ghana. He is currently Chairman of the Ghana Oil and Gas Insurance Pool (GOGIP) in Ghana, as well as a Director of Hollard Insurance Company, Ghana.
