India celebrates 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi
...marks International Day of Non-Violence in
Accra
The Indian
High Commission of Ghana has launched a year-long celebration of the 150th
birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, marking International Day of Non-violence.
Speaking at
the launch, High commissioner of India to Ghana, Birender Singh, explained the event’s
significance, urging all present to emulate the legacy of Gandhi.
“Gandhi was
a great son of truth and non-violence. He fought against non-violence and
ensured that his people would get civilisation. As Kofi Annan was a luxurious
son of Ghana, Mahatma Gandhi was also a reputable son to India. He believed in
education and non-violence.
“Gandhi was
greatly adored in his country, and in the eyes of millions of his fellow
countrymen and women was a great soul, for which the nation conferred on him
the title ‘Mahatma’, meaning the “Great Soul,” he said.
Also
gracing the occasion was former President John Agyekum Kufour, who encouraged
leaders to learn from the principles with which Gandhi made it to the top -
especially the non-violence.
“Let it be
our prayer that leaders everywhere and anywhere will respond to non-violent
protests with a sense not of foreboding, but that of an outstretched hand of
dialogue and peaceful co-existence.
“May there
be more Gandhis in this world to usher humanity, in dignity and peace, to
global co-existence,” he said.
As part of
the celebration, the Indian High Commission - with the support of Indian
companies in the country, donated pharmaceutical products and a water-reservoir
to the Gandhi Ward at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.
Mr. Singh
explained that the donation was made to fulfil a promise the High Commission
made to the ward last year. He thanked all the Indian companies that responded
to the call to come to the aid of the hospital.
Another
highlight of the celebration was the presentation of a US$1million dollar grant
to the Indian Kofi Annan ICT Centre.
The High
Commissioner also paid a visit to the James Town Prison in Accra, where he
donated some gift items.
